Jurgen Cautreels is a digital marketing king who has his fingers dipped in just about every internet industry you can imagine. From digital marketing to cryptocurrency to NFTs, Jurgen Cautreels has been finding success everywhere.

I wanted to figure out how Jurgen Cautreels found his place in the internet marketing world and see what advice he had for young upstarts trying to get their foot in the door. I asked Jurgen for an interview, and he agreed! So here’s some of the best advice you’ll find for getting into the internet marketing business.

Do you need a degree for an internet marketing position nowadays?

Absolutely not. A degree may make things a bit easier, but not for the reasons you may think. I believe that anyone can develop the skills they need to be an internet marketer without going through school, but going to a reputable university will open up a lot of doors.

There are so many ways to network through a university, and just having that degree on your CV will be a huge bonus to potential employers. However, I definitely do not think it is necessary to pursue a marketing career.

What skills should someone learn if they want to be an internet marketer?

There are so many skills to work on. You should be very good at communicating. You should be able to get your ideas across very fast and in very simple terms that anyone can understand.

You should also be able to understand and stay on top of social media and search engine algorithms. Not technically, but you should know how SEO and keywords work. Having experience with graphic design and creating eye-catching, informative graphics is also very useful.

What are some ways that people can learn state-of-the-art marketing techniques without going to college?

Well, the first thing they should do is research good marketing books and podcasts. These are fantastic tools for learning the very basics of marketing.

There are a few podcasts and Youtube channels that will also cover modern techniques as they start surfacing. However, my best advice is to pay attention to everything you see and try to look at things from a marketing perspective.

For example, many Youtube channels have recently started showing bloopers at the end of their videos. Do you think that’s a coincidence? This shows a pattern, and if so many channels are following it, it must work, and now you can incorporate it into your own strategy.

Is it easier to get a digital marketing job if you already have an online presence?

Absolutely. You can think of your own online presence as your portfolio. If you have a social media page with a lot of followers, you can use that as proof of your knowledge.

Show how you’ve obtained those followers, how you’ve researched your market, and what steps you’ve taken that you could also take for your potential employer to grow their business. Having your own website is also a great idea.

Is freelancing a good way to get your foot in the door?

Definitely, real-world experience is always great, no matter what career you’re pursuing. Internships, freelancing, all of that is a great way to learn and put your skills to the test.

Especially for small, local businesses, where the pressure won’t be as heavy. These will give you a great opportunity to test new strategies and find your strong points.
